STARWEST CONSTRUCTIONS

Starwest Constructions Limited operates in the rugged Star Mountains in Papua New Guinea’s largest and most remote region, the Western Province.

Starwest is a diversified mining and civil construction company with expertise in owning, operating and maintaining a varied fleet of construction plant and equipment.

Starwest’s civil construction activities also include aggregate and concrete production, steel fabrication and concrete civil construction, pipeline construction, road construction and maintenance, airstrip construction, pile driving, marine structures, mine support activities, dredge support services and water and sewerage reticulation.

All of these activities are undertaken in one of the world’s wettest environments with more than 10 meters of annual rainfall and in one of the most inaccessible regions in the country.

This all would not be possible without the dedicated 500 strong workforce of well trained PNG national and expatriate Starwest staff who have an outstanding safety record.

CORPORATE DETAILS

Starwest also owns, maintains and operates a mine production drill, road and drainage making equipment, cranes and support equipment. To ensure continuous production is maintained we operate a comprehensive maintenance workshop, a central machine shop, component rebuilding workshop, welding and heavy welding workshops and an extensive spare parts warehouse.

Starwest maintains the 160 kilometers of highway between the Ok Tedi mine and its port, Kiunga. This is the only access to Ok Tedi, apart from its airport, so it must be maintained in top condition to enable the daily supply of fuel, mill consumables, food, spares and other essentials for the smooth operation of the mine and its supporting township of 25,000 people. Amongst other things, this requires the annual production of 75,000 m3 of road base aggregates.

Other support activities include building and maintaining Tabubil and remote airstrips, wharves for Fly River communities, pipelines for water supply to the mill and concentrate delivery to the port of Kiunga, subdivision development, water & sewage reticulation, bitumen street sealing and the operation of four concrete batch plants.

It makes maintaining this world class business even more astounding when you consider that this is accomplished in one of the world’s wettest and most remote locations. A feat no other contractor has been able to match in over 30 years of Starwest’s existence.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES

Starwest has been contracted to upgrade 20,000 meters of road with bitumen seal each year between Tabubil and Kiunga by Ok Tedi Mine.

As both a Community Relations effort and reducing wear and tear on the OTML owned convoy trucks, OTML has commissioned Starwest to prepare the road base, provide correct alignment, provide drainage including stone pitching drains, installing culverts and headwalls as well as completing the bitumen seal process for the only access to the Ok Tedi mine.

This road is the lifeline to Ok Tedi. Absolutely all the materials required to operate  the mine, from the heavy equipment to fuel and food for all employees, contractors and locals need to travel this road. This amounts to considerable daily traffic which can’t be disrupted without significant effect on the mine. On top of that this region endures on average above 10 meters of rain per year making it the forth wettest place on earth.

The responsibility for maintaining this vital link has been entrusted to Starwest for over 20 years and now the job of sealing the road has also been awarded to Starwest.

Starwest has a fleet of graders, rollers, excavators, road sweepers, multi tyred rollers, bitumen kettles, aggregate plants as well as a fully automated bitumen spray truck for completing this task. This equipment, operated by our well trained workforce, will see a high quality road produced which will withstand the rigors of the heavy vehicle movement and the unforgiving elements.

CAREERS

Due to the remote location and extreme environmental conditions in which Starwest operates, a diverse range of employment opportunities exist to ensure the business runs smoothly – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Starwest is an accredited registered training organisation and manages its own in-house trades training program. The program has seen hundreds of Papua New Guineans trained in a range of tasks from clerical to operating and maintaining our 500 tonne face shovels which are the primary production tool for the giant Ok Tedi mine.

Persons with existing trades experience are also required and on-the-job up skill training is offered. Interested persons wishing to find out more about the Trades Training Program should contact Starwest on +675 649 9077.
